Planning a vacation

Figuring Out What You Really Need For Your Vacation

Planning a vacation can be stressful, but that doesn’t meant hat it really ahs to be this way. You can actually get a lot done just by stepping back and deciding that you’re not going to get stressed. The more time you have to work with, the easier is to build a good vacation. Remember that the focus is really on the experience, not necessary the money that you spend. Far too often we assume that you have to drop big money on a trip just to say that you took a vacation worth having, but this isn’t the case at all. It’s possible to spend all of that money on a vacation and still feel like you haven’t done anything wroth writing home about. Everything in your vacation should be done with purpose, and that means pushing forward to really make sure that you will be able to have a good time.

To do this, you need to think about the type of experience you want to have. If you’re used to doing the same thing every vacation, why not mix it up? This means that if you’re use dot just sitting around all day; why not add in some adventure? Adventure tours have gotten quite popular, with more and more people finding that they are actually quite capable of doing amazing things. You don’t have to be in super shape to go on an adventure tour either. You just have to be willing to have a good time and push hard!

What about if you’ve always taken the same budget trips over and over? It’s time to inject a little luxury in your life. Why wouldn’t you want to make sure that you have a little spoiling here and there? After all, don’t you work hard for your money? Shouldn’t there be a time where you just kick back and have a good time? That’s what we thought too.

You should also think about doing some social traveling with a group if you’ve never done it before. Group travel planning can be stressful, but that’s why you’re taking a lot of time in advance to get it right. That way you aren’t stressed out and wondering how to get things done. We’re just keeping in real — if you would rather not do it, then you would rather not do it. Solo travel can be good for some things and crazy for other things.

How can we touch on vacation planning without even thinking about your luggage needs? This is where you will really need to think things through. You see, it’s very tempting to make sure that you carry just about everything you can think of, but we don’t think you really want to run through the airport with four suitcases full of things that you’re not even going to really use on your vacation! One of the biggest mistakes that travel newbies make is that they take along too many things. It’s a lot smarter to just budget on the fact that you’re going to need to buy stuff when you get there. Not only will you pack less, you’ll also use less. Now that’s living green!

Overall, you need to make sure that you give all of these things some thought. That way, you will really know what you need for your vacation!

Book Flight

Ready to Book Your Next Flight – Not So Fast!

Whether you’re thinking about your first plane trip or your 10th one, you’re still going to be fixed on one thing: saving as much money as possible. Now, most people want to save money while still being able to enjoy a comfortable plane trip. The days of trying to cut costs to the point of discomfort are over. So if you really want to book a good flight, you’re going to need to stop and think about a few things before you plunge in headfirst.

First and foremost, you need to look at all of the costs involved with your flight, not just the actual cost of the ticket. You will want to make sure that you know the baggage fees, including how much it would cost if you’re over the limit. This “total cost” is what you’ll want to base your comparisons on, not just the fare cost.

Speaking of the fare cost, you’re going to get the best rates if you can be flexible on when you leave and when you arrive. For example, if you can search one day before and one day after the day you really want to travel to your destination, you can save a lot of money. It’s when you have to fly on a certain date where you might be locked into paying more.

You’ll want to go ahead and use a metasearch site for your flight search so that you can look in multiple websites at once. After all, you probably have other things to do than just be online looking at flights, so anything that can cut down on your time is definitely a good thing.

Don’t forget to think about any rewards credit cards that you already have when you’re trying to book your flight. Collecting rewards points is always a good thing, because you can then turn around and actually get either more flights later down the road, or you can actually get cash back. Of course, you don’t want to start out a rewards credit card just for one or two flights — but if you find that you’re going to be spending the money anyway, why not get a little something in return?

The type of flight that you book matters too. There are going to be better deals to go ahead and book coach and hold out for a good upgrade on the day that you fly. You might only need to pay $25-50 in order to move up to the next flight class, compared to if you had booked business or first class the first time around.

If you need to also get a rental car and a hotel room, you might save even more by grouping everything together. Just make sure that you’re really looking at every factor so that you get a true “apples to apples” comparison.

Overall, it’s not difficult at all to book your next flight with confidence, knowing that you’ve done everything you can to save as much money as possible.

Small Luggage

In Praise of Small Luggage

Quick! What were your last trips like? If they weren’t s good as you wanted them to be, could it be that there were some bugs in the planning process? Allow us to identify one; too much luggage. Even if you just managed to squeaks under the weight limit, you probably brought along things that just sat there collecting dust and taking up valuable space. You never want to overpack, but a lot of people fear that they’re going to be missing something.

Folks, unless you’re vacationing in Siberia, it’s downright impossible to miss something so badly that you can’t replace it. Yes, there will be some electrical tangles from time to time, and you definitely don’t want to leave home without important medications — but make sure that you include your prescription for them! Yet the point that we’re making here is sometimes small is really beautiful. In a big way.

What are we talking about? Well, today we wanted to step forward and just come out in praise of small luggage and trips that allow you to carry a few things and end up with a lot more functionality than you might have expected.

You see, you want to plan your trip with enough money left over where you can buy disposable versions of the things that you need. Not only will this allow you to pack lighter, it also lets your luggage go on pretty much without too much com plaint. Once you try to bring on all of those weird liquids and other things that slow you down at checkpoints, you might find yourself having problems getting to your flight on time. Compare that to all of the travelers you see just carrying small pieces of luggage.

It can take time to really feel comfortable carrying less luggage. If you are used to carrying around four bags of luggage, why not pare it down to three bags? On your next trip after that, you might want to pare it down to two bags. Of course, you’ll have to modify this for your own personal needs. Take along a few clothes, but let’s be honest — you’re going to want to buy new clothes, new shoes, and new jewelry. You’re going to want to bring back things, and having a small luggage that isn’t stuffed to the brim will allow you to actually do that.

We’re not saying that there’s never a time where you might want to carry around a lot of luggage. If you know that you’re going to an area that’s going to be a different culture from you and you really want things that remind you of home, by all means you should take the extra luggage. This goes double if you’re doing a mini-retirement and you’ll actually be gone for several months or half a year. That’s a long time to be away, and you might not be comfortable yet carrying around only a small bit of luggage. As you get more used to the concept though, you should be aware that you’re going to end up wanting to carry less stuff in general.

Once you really see how much stuff you carry around on a daily basis, paring it down is going to free you of so much more than just the physical items. You’re going to free yourself from stress points you didn’t even know existed, and isn’t that always in style? Check it out today for yourself!

Are Staycations Dead?

If there’s one thing we can say about the world of travel, is that the world of travel really likes its buzzwords. Once a word has officially jumped the shark and entered the world of mainstream commercials, we know that it’s definitely a sign of the travel world gone crazy. Take the word staycation, for example. During the height of the recession it was the buzzword of choice. You didn’t have to go out of the country or even out of the state. You could stay right where you were, enjoying the sights and sounds of your local neighborhood. However, now that the economy is slowly coming back to life, some people are asking if staycations are dead and gone now that things are coming back into a bit of a balance.

We think that staycations are absolutely alive and well, and there are a few reasons for that. First and foremost, staycations still represent the most important thing about travel: you’re getting out and collecting experiences that will last a life time. You don’t have to fly halfway around the world to get that, and you certainly don’t have to try to run around hoping that you’re going to find a good time just because you happen to be in a foreign country. The truth is that we’re rather fond of staycations, because they do give us a chance to really explore the city around us. We’re like most people — there’s just not enough time in the day to really see everything that there is to see. That can leave one feeling pretty upset and empty — after all, how can you really claim to be a resident of a city that you’ve never fully gotten to know? It’s easy to feel like a visitor in your own city, and we can definitely understand that type of pain.

So, what’s the answer? Plan a staycation, of course!

The first thing that you will want to make sure that you do is think about exactly where you want to go, and what you want to do. Living in your house and traveling around will cut down on costs, but is that really what travel is about? You might be able to score a deal on a hotel simply because you’re a local and you want to really be able to have a good time. On the flip side, you might also want to think about going ahead and staying at home if you know that you or your family have food allergies or you will have pets that will need to be boarded. While we want you to have a good time we definitely don’t want you to be surrounded by issues and concerns that will take away from your experience.

If you’re traveling with family and friends, then you really need to make sure that everyone is on board. The hardest thing about staycations is getting other people excite dint hem. They might feel that the staycation isn’t really a vacation because you’re not really venturing that far from home, which means that there’s no real chance to explore something new. It’s just the same stuff that you pass everyday but you never have any chance to really check out.

While we’re on the subject of local vacations, this is a great time to realty stick your tongue out at some corporations. Avoiding chain restaurants and hotels is definitely a good idea, and can lead to a lot of good things happen when you really look at it. The last thing that you will want to do is find yourself being unable to actually get anything done within the travel world just because you can’t see the benefit of something. The truth here is that you will come to a point where you really do want to get away, but you don’t have the money to really do it big. This is where the staycation comes in – you essentially get to have your cake and eat it too.

So now is the perfect time to start at least thinking about the staycation. Why not make it today? The planning, of course!

Can it Really Be Safe to Travel in an Uncertain Economy?

Before we go into today’s topic, we have to say — we love getting your questions, comments, and concerns. In fact, today’s topic is ripped straight from a question that one of our readers had: just how safe can it really be to travel around the country when the market is so bad. Whether you’re talking about a domestic trip or an international one, the question definitely needs to be asked. You need to feel comfortable wherever you decide to go, and we don’t fault you at all for wanting to make sure that you’re going to be well taken care of. However, one of the things that we do indeed stress is a sense of cowing about the world around you. Not every place that you want to visit is going to be somewhere that’s going to be dangerous to your health. Not everywhere you go is going to be somewhere that will be filled with people that hate you.

If you think this, then chances are good that you’ve been watching the news. We’re not trying to be rude or judgmental — we like the news as well. However, it’s been our observation that anytime the news is involved, there’s going to be conflict. There’s going to be the assumption that everywhere is dangerous, which in turn means that nowhere is safe. That’s a pretty stressful concept when you really look at it. However, the reason why it’s done like this is because you have to realize that the news outlet’s job is to scare you. If you weren’t scared, you wouldn’t be paying them any attention, and they can’t have that. Break out of this cycle by simply choosing not to even be part of it. Break out of the cycle by deciding right here, right now that you’re going to use common sense and be smart on your next trip.

You see, anywhere can be dangerous if you don’t stay alert and aware of your surroundings. That’s how pickpockets and other criminals get you in the first place. They see that you’re a target and that’s exactly how they treat you — as a target. They treat you as a victim that is just waiting to be victimized, and we don’t agree with that at all. That’s part of the reason why we suggest traveling in groups — that way you really won’t have to deal with being harassed by people that could have ulterior motives. Once they see that you are traveling with many people, they are going to realize that you’re not really wroth the hassle and they’ll move on to someone else.

This is also why you need to be very mindful of how you look. If you look like you could have thousands of dollars in valuables on your person, you can bet that someone is eventually going to try to rob you. So it’s better to try to look up how the local population dresses and moves around, and then try to mirror them as much as possible. Sure, you wont’ e as fancy looking as you might like, but it could safe your life — and your stuff too!

Overall, paying attention tot he world around you is the key to being safe anywhere — not just when you’re on vacation. Keep these tips in mind and you should be good to go!

Basingstoke

5 things you never know about Basingstoke

Basingstoke is probably not the first place people think of when they are planning a UK break away, but on closer inspection, this lively Hampshire town has plenty to offer, so why not take a look for yourself and book a room in one of the many affordable 3 star hotels in Basingstoke?

Basingstoke is one of the major towns in the south-east of England; just a short train, bus or car journey away from London and the county town, Winchester. If you fancy making the short trip, there is a wide range of hotels in Basingstoke to suit all tastes and budgets; if you want to be in the thick of the action, book a room at the Red Lion Hotel in Basingstoke, which is right in the centre of town.

You may already be aware of some facts about Basingstoke, but here are five things you probably never knew about this Hampshire market town.

1. Basingstoke: the brunt of the joke

Basingstoke rarely hits the national headlines but it has been mentioned in several famous comedic acts and works of literature. As far back as the 16th Century, William Shakespeare made some rather unpleasant comments about Basingstoke in part two of Henry IV while  more recently, Basingstoke featured in Gilbert and Sullivan’s comedic opera, Ruddigore and Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Basingstoke was also mentioned in the hit sitcom, Only Fools and Horses, after Rodney Trotter was expelled from an art college in the town for smoking cannabis.

2. Famous residents

Basingstoke was home to one of the UK’s most iconic writers, Jane Austen. Austen, famed for her sweeping, indulgent, romantic works of literature, was born in Steventon, a village very close to Basingstoke and she wrote some of her most famous works, including Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey whilst living in the area. Liz Hurley, the glamorous model and actress, was also born in the town and fans of the original series of Gladiators will also be interested to learn that Falcon hails from Basingstoke.

3. A sinister past

Basingstoke is a lively, typically British market town but it also has a sinister side; Basingstoke was home to Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in England. Ellis, a resident of Basingstoke and a former pupil of Fairfield’s Senior Girls’ School in the town, was sentenced to death after being found guilty of the murder of her lover, David Blakely. Ellis was hanged at Royal Holloway Prison in London on the 13th July 1955 and the case attracted phenomenal media interest.

4. Festival fever

Basingstoke is home to one of the UK’s biggest free live music events; Basingstoke Live. The festival which is held at the War Memorial attracts thousands of visitors every year. Artists that have graced the stage in the past include Chas and Dave, Chipmunk and The Cheeky Girls.

5. The Beast of Basingstoke

Some people will be more familiar with the Beast of Bodmin, but legend has it that Basingstoke had its very own beast. The large cat, which was believed to be a lion or a puma, was apparently spotted several times in the area during the 90s. Local rumours suggest that the beast was killed; however, no official news reports have confirmed this.

Basingstoke may not have been top of your top UK destinations, but why not break the mould and discover some of this lively little town’s hidden secrets for yourself? There’s plenty of accommodation on offer to suit all budgets, so it’s well worth paying the town a visit.
